From Ball of Wax Volume 38 (Fall 2014)
Played by Levi, Dekker Deen (drums), and Jonathan Wooster (bass)
I wrote this song on assignment for the Bushwick Book Club, in response to a chapter in Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States. I chose to poach my words from primary sources that Zinn quotes in his book. This song uses the text of an anonymous 1847 letter to the Cambridge Chronicle explaining why the writer will not fight in the Mexican-American war. His strident tone reminded me of Woody Guthrie or Phil Ochs, so I wrote a pretty straight-forward folk song to go with his words. Dekker and Jon helped turn it into a proper rock song.
One of the finest albums of the first decade of the 21st century. Michael Sanchez is perhaps the world's most underrated songwriter. Levi Fuller & the Library
