From Ball of Wax Volume 35 (Winter 2014)
I wrote this song for the Richard Hugo House’s Literary Series. The theme was “The Paper Chase,” i.e. the pursuit of the American dream, success, riches, what have you. I wrote three songs in total, but this was the only one written from my own perspective. For better or worse, I’ve never felt particularly ambitious in that way, never felt driven to grab for that brass ring or whatever other cliche of success comes to mind. Contentment is probably the enemy of creativity in many cases, but here’s my attempt at turning it into a song anyway.
